Flattened segments with rounded margins and small bristles at the edges/tips; star-shaped, radially symmetrical flowers unlike either Schlumbergera species, typically blooming in spring
Scientific synonyms Hatiora gaertneri and Schlumbergera gaertneri are still in common horticultural use. Flower shape - radially symmetrical and star-like - is the most reliable way to tell this apart from Schlumbergera species, whose flowers are asymmetrical. Bloom season (spring) offers supporting evidence but shouldn't be used alone, and bud drop can follow sudden environmental change.
