Polka Dot Plant
Hypoestes phyllostachya
Patterned Tropical Foliage (Fittonia, Hypoestes, Hemigraphis)Mood Meter: Needs a Little Love
Also called: Freckle Face Plant
How to identify it
Small oval leaves densely spotted in pink, red, white, or green in a scattered polka-dot pattern, rather than a contrasting vein network; grows more upright than Fittonia
Growing characteristics
Growth habit: upright, bushy, herbaceous. Drought tolerance: low.
Wilts dramatically and quickly when dry, but usually recovers rapidly after watering. Fading of the pink/red/white coloring points toward insufficient light. Leggy growth can also just reflect natural maturity or a lack of pinching, not necessarily a problem.
Plant Mood Meter: Needs a Little Love
It communicates thirst dramatically and grows quickly, but needs regular pinching, moisture, and enough light to stay colorful and compact.
Care guide
Light
Bright indirect light. Direct sun: Avoid harsh direct midday sun.
Water
Water when the upper surface begins drying; avoid letting it remain severely wilted for long periods or keeping it saturated.
Soil / substrate
Light, well-draining tropical mix that retains moderate moisture.
Humidity
Average to moderate humidity is helpful.
Support / growth
No support needed; regular pinching helps maintain a compact form.
