Nerve Plant
Fittonia albivenis
Patterned Tropical Foliage (Fittonia, Hypoestes, Hemigraphis)Mood Meter: Kinda High-Maintenance
Also called: Mosaic Plant, Silver Net Plant
Scientific Name History
Current accepted name: Fittonia albivenis
Previously or alternatively classified as: Fittonia verschaffeltii
How to identify it
Small oval leaves with a highly contrasting white, pink, or red vein network, rather than scattered spots; low creeping growth habit distinguishes it from the more upright Polka Dot Plant
Growing characteristics
Growth habit: low-growing, creeping, spreading. Drought tolerance: low.
Wilts extremely dramatically when the substrate gets too dry, but rapid recovery after watering strongly supports temporary dehydration rather than a deeper problem. Persistent wilting despite wet substrate should raise concern for root problems instead.
Plant Mood Meter: Kinda High-Maintenance
It can recover dramatically from a wilt, but it prefers consistently moist soil and humid, stable conditions.
Care guide
Light
Medium to bright indirect light. Direct sun: Avoid direct sun.
Water
Keep the mix lightly and consistently moist; allow only modest surface drying and avoid repeated severe drought.
Soil / substrate
Airy, moisture-retentive tropical mix with good drainage.
Humidity
Moderate to high humidity is strongly preferred.
Support / growth
No support needed; natural growth is creeping/spreading.
